MAJOR SAVINGS FOR VAN FLEET OPERATORS

Van Fleet Savings

The UK's van fleet operators could save millions of pounds if they ensure their drivers are fully trained in how to use fuel efficiently and drive safely, claims a new industry scheme.

A driver training programme called Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (Safed) was originally developed for trucks.

However, after its success a combination of training providers, van fleet operators, trade associations, van manufacturers and government organisations have developed the scheme for van drivers, reports Fleet NewsNet.

Claire Shrewsbury, programme manager for Safed, said that pilot schemes carried out with van drivers from Sainsbury's and the Royal Mail over a nine mile course had increased the amount of fuel leftover by 9.5 per cent and reduced unnecessary fuel-consuming gear changes by 59 per cent.

This means that companies with van fleets could save up to £500 of diesel per vehicle. In addition, the programme says it will lower the amount of accidents through safer driving techniques.

Therefore, van fleet operators who send their drivers on this programme also stand to benefit from lower van insurance premiums.

Staff members who are already approved driving instructors can go on the development course to become qualified to run the programme themselves.
